It made a great difference, although it's still too loud of course. If it's less 2mil it's not sound deadener, it won't have enough mass. If for no other reason, learn about material toxicity, fire dangers, heat related decomposition, mold, mildew, weight addition, and the list goes on when it comes to the nasty homemade solutions out there. ![]() ![]() I do this work for clients and I treated my own syncro and it's as quiet and nice inside as a friend's new Honda is. I've been doing this forever and trust me, use Second Skin products and 3M Thinsulate materials for cavities or just don't use anything at all. It will devalue the van as much as cheap paint jobs and house carpet does. Jesus dude don't put that crap in your van. My van is WAY quieter now, but I did new weatherstripping at the same time and I’m sure that helps too. I have a solid MLV sheet on the cargo floor under the carpet. It seems to work well, but it made some of the interior panels’ fit a little janky and I don’t know how long the contact cement will hold up the MLV on the vertical panels (so far so good though!) I used contact cement to attempt to cover at least 25% of vertical metal panels in the walls and doors with MLV and sandwiched Reflectix behind interior panels. I covered the entire front floor with a layer of MLV, a layer of Reflectix, plus the factory carpet and floor mats. My thinking was gluing MLV to panels would deaden panels and the still air pockets in the Reflectix Would absorb noise. The improvement was subtle-to-non-existent.Ĩ months ago, I got a 4x25 foot roll of 1 lb/ft^2 mass loaded vinyl (MLV) from Amazon for $100, plus a roll of Reflectix from Home Depot for $40ish. I opted after much research to by generic sound mat off eBay, the quality is great and has 2 mil. You can find an asphalt based product but you don't want this. Its a 1.3 mil product in a 6" wide roll, in the window dept. Home Depot- they have a butyl based peel and stick flashing material where the actual flashing is. Some people have used extruded rigid foam insulation, it does not absorb moisture. a few pieces in key locations will cut down on the noise from vibrations very well. the thicker the butyl material the better the dampening. it's not going to be a very good thermal insulator. the bytul tape type of sound deadening is relying on the mass of the butyl material to absorb the vibrations. Sound deadening and insulation are two different things and require separate solutions. So IF YOU ARE NOT GOING to use one of the big brands, what cheap hack brand have you used and what was your experience. But I keep reading about Home Depot and Lowes duct insulation as a cheap option. And I know because I am in a hot climate I need butyl based. I know all about the popular options of insulation and sound deadening like Fat Mat.
